Two bathrooms of the same size can take very different amounts of work. One may have flat, sound walls ready to tile; the other may need boarding out, levelling and tanking first. A single headline price would either overcharge the easy job or under-quote the difficult one, so we price the actual room in front of us.

These are the factors that move the price most, in rough order of impact:

• Tile size and material: large-format porcelain, natural stone and marble are heavier and slower to set than standard ceramic.

• Layout: straight stack or brick bond is quicker than herringbone, chevron, mosaic or a feature pattern.
• Cuts and detail: niches, window reveals, mitred corners and pipe boxing take real time.

Does the tile I choose change the labour cost?

Yes. A 600x600 porcelain needs a flatter substrate and often two people to place, while marble and some natural stone need sealing and careful handling because they mark easily. Small mosaic sheets look cheap per box but are slow to set out and grout, so the labour goes up.

Is it cheaper to tile floor to ceiling or half height?

Half-height tiling uses fewer tiles and less labour, so it is usually the cheaper option. Full-height tiling costs more but is easier to keep clean and avoids a painted band above the tile that will need redecorating later. It is a budget decision rather than a right or wrong one.

What else should I budget for besides the tiling?

You buy the tiles, so add the tile cost plus roughly ten per cent extra for cuts and breakages, and more for herringbone or patterned layouts.
